As of August 4th the Avery County Sheriff's Office will be temporarily transitioning the detention facility to an intake only facility.

The Entire inmate population currently housed at their present facility will be transferred to other detention facilities within the state. The Sheriff's Office said “this is necessary due to the current staffing deficiencies at the facility that have grown within the last year.”

They also clarified that during this temporary transition new detention staff will be hired and that current staff will undergo mandated training certifications. This is not totally unusual a lot of similar facilities are experiencing the same issues. As of yet the Sheriff's office does not know when this transition period will end, and has stated it is dependent on their ability to recruit and employ qualified applicants.
