Recently Watauga County Board of Commissioners Chair John Welch was being accused of no longer being able to effectively represent Watauga County since he took up a second residence in Virginia.

The challenge made against Welch was dismissed last Wednesday evening in a 4-1 vote by the Board of Elections. Chair Michael Behrent, Matt Walpole and Marv Williamsen are the 3 democrats on the board who all voted against the motion. The two Republicans on the board, Eric Eller and James Hill were divided when Hill voted against the motion as well. Behrent cited the numbered memo 2018-07 which states the Board of Elections is not to hear voter challenges based on qualifications like a change residency less than 90 days before an election.
